The mission of IEES-BAS is to produce and accumulate scientific knowledge, and train and enhance the qualification of highly specialized staff for the development of efficient modern technologies for electrochemical energy systems.

The Institute’s main activities include fundamental and applied research in the fields of: electrochemical power sources, electrochemical materials science, nanomaterials; development of electrochemical methods, techniques and tools, and invention of new technologies.

Our research activities are organized in two thematic platforms: "Batteries" and "Fuel Cells and Hydrogen", and include the following topics:

  • new types of rechargeable batteries (Zn / Air; Li / Air; Ni / Zn);
  • new types of lead-acid batteries for energy storage from alternative and renewableenergy sources and batteries for transport vehicles;
  • hydrogen energy systems (fuel cells and electrolyzers, reversible systems for the generation and conversion of hydrogen by integration with renewable energy sources);
  • supercapacitors;
  • advanced electrochemical methods for monitoring and diagnostics of energy storage systems;
  • multidisciplinary education and training with the aim of preparing highly qualified specialists and scholars.
